THIS WEEK ON A SMALL VOICE PODCAST MEMBER-ONLY EPISODE...
A check-in with early previous guest Murray Ballard, who joined me on the podcast back in 2016, discussing his long-term project Ghosts In The Field, soon to be published as a book. The work is a photographic exploration of Salento, a region in southern Italy where ancient traditions exist in contrast with ecological crisis and modernity. At the heart of the project is the devastation caused by Xylella, a bacterial disease that has decimated more than 21 million olive trees. Once the foundation of Salento’s agricultural and cultural identity, these trees now stand as skeletal ruins — remnants of a centuries-old way of life…
And last week’s guest, Ximena Borrazás, returns to tackle the bonus questions.
Sample question:
What is the most essential lesson that you might pass on to someone who’s thinking about a photography career or becoming a photographer?
I will say run for the breaking news because breaking news will give you or will reveal what topics are important to you. But if you want to succeed or if you want to create a big impact, this will not be probably through the breaking news. It will be through a story that first of all moves you as a human, and then it will create an impact. And I think it’s very important because some photographers, they think all the time about the prizes. Prizes are important, right? And we cannot lie on this. But if you think only about the prize, you will never do anything powerful.
