What’s the one most essential lesson you would pass on to someone considering a photography ‘career’ today? (or just considering ‘being a photographer’?)
“They should learn to shoot with a roll of film first. And then you will understand photography more and even better, knowing the mechanics of having a roll of film, and what it takes to get that picture in front of you before you say you’ve taken a picture. With digital all you’ve got to do is look at the back of the camera, ‘ok, that’s great’, download into onto your computer and you’ve got it. But with that roll of film: you’ve got to rewind it back into the camera, you’ve got to take it into the darkroom, drop it into a tank, give it 3 minutes, then into the fix and then into the water. You don’t do that with digital. It’s nothing. It’s cheating.”
