DOCUMENTARY PREVIEW…
If you happen to live in Chicago, on Thursday, May 14th there is a sneak preview screening and a special fundraising auction to support the completion of the forthcoming documentary, Art Shay: An America So Real, which is scheduled for release later this year. Details of the event here.
I will confess I had never heard of the photographer Art Shay so was intruiged to read the filmmakers’ description of him as “one of the most important photographers of the 20th century.”
In explaining why they chose Shay as the subject of a feature length doc., and indeed why now is an appropriate time to release it, the filmmakers state: “Today, as the nation continues to grapple with questions of identity, inequality, power, and shared purpose, Shay’s work feels more urgent than ever. Art Shay: An America So Real reveals not just the story of a fearless photographer, but the story of a nation—seen through the unflinching, deeply human eyes of a man who spent his life chronicling its truth.
Through intimate interviews with Shay, his family, contemporaries, historians, critics, and collectors, the documentary traces a life shaped by immigrant grit, moral conviction, unbearable tragedy and an unshakable belief in the possibility of America. Though celebrated in Chicago and revered in journalistic circles, Shay remained under‑recognized nationally—despite being present with his camera at some of the country’s most defining moments.”
I’ll be really interested to watch this when the finished film finally comes to fruition and learn more about the man’s life and work.
